"first son of Phineas*, John', SamueP, John", born at Chatham, Conn., in 1744 (probably about May 1), (baptized May 19, 1744, Ch. Rec); married at Portland, Conn., July 23, 1767, Elizabeth Hall (b. 1747), daughter of Capt. Samuel and Elizabeth (Wilcox) Hall, of that place. Lived in Chatham, now Portland, Conn. Sea captain and farmer. Died in Chatham, January 22, 1806-7, aged 68 years. He was a sea captain for years, commanding privateers and taking prizes during the Revolutionary War, and still sailed the seas to English and to other foreign ports after peace was declared. He was an enterprising business man, and from 1767 to 1795 an active land operator, as the Land Records of Chatham show. For the last years of his life, however, he was an invalid.

I Elizabeth, born Jan. 19, 1768-9; married (1) Capt. (Sea), Walter Hilliard, of Killingsworth, Conn., who died young; one child only, Abby, who died in infancy; (2) May 20, 1811, Nathan Gillum, of Portland, Conn., who died Nov. 4, 1 821; date of her death unknown. 386 H
II Cale, b. Oct. 27, 1769; m. Oct. 3, 1790, Esther Crittenden; d. Feb. 22, 1843.
III Charles, born Jan. 14, 1772; died Julys, 1776.
IV Grace, born Oct. 27, 1773 (Town Rec); married (Ch. Rec.) May 4, 1794, Capt. James Stewart (b. July 12, 1771), of Portland, Conn. Lived at Portland, Conn., and there died, July 4, 1806. Capt. Stewart died and was buried at sea. They had four children, descend Chatham and Farmington, Conn. 285 ants of whom lived in Middle Haddam, Conn. 300
V William Pitt, b. July 25, 1775; m. Dec. 3, 1797, Sarah Davis; d. June 16, 1848.
VI Mary, born Oct. 30, 1777; married Oct. 20, 1 796, William (b. Aug. 14, 1 764 or '7; d. Mch. 21, 1831), son of Ozias Bidwell, of Eastbury, Conn. Lived at Farmington, Conn., and thence removed to Madison, Lake Co., O., in 1820, where she died, July 31, 1868. Children,six: Walter Hilliard, b. June 21, 1798; Emeline, July 13, 1800; William, March 21, 1805; Oliver B., May 16, 1810; Elizabeth, Sept. 16, 181 2; Mary Ann, July 15, 1815.
VII Luther, born Oct. 7, 1779; joiner and cabinetmaker; died at sea. May, 1805, tradition says by violence,^ aged 26, while on a voyage to buy mahogany.
VIII Charles, born 1781; died at sea, Nov., 1803. 304
IX Samuel, b. Sept. 18, 1783; m. Nov. 5, 1808, Sarah Bailey; d. Aug. 8, 1862.
X Sarah, born in June, 1789; unmarried. Lived after about the age of twentyfour years with her aunt, Mrs. Ruth Hall Deane (Mrs. Phineas Deane), until that lady's death, then with her cousin, a daughter of Mrs. Deane, Mrs. Harriet Makinster (Mrs. Wm. Mackinster), until she, Sarah, died Sept. 4, 1870, aged 81 years. Buried in Mr. Mackinster's vault in Indian Hill cemetery at Middletown, Conn. Note, — She had earned and saved about $2,000, the income of which she used to bring up two orphans, nephew and niece, of a man who died a New York milhonaire, whose fortune went largely to lawyers in the usual contest over a large fortune. At her death she left a sum of money to pay for removing her father's remains from the old burying ground to a new one.
