Biography

Margaret Penman was born during 1838 in Scotland

Her father William Penman was supposedly an Officer in the Scot's Greys in Edinburgh ?, and her mother was Margaret Ferguson

It appear that Margaret had three siblings

  • John
  • Willie
  • Jane (yet to confirm, but who believed to have also migrated to Australia at some stage, and married James J. Roberts, of Harden NSW)

Margaret appears to have travelled alone from Scotland to South Australia in 1858 as an assisted passenger aboard the Bee out of Liverpool (not long after her parents both died). There is a record of a 20 year old domestic servant, Margaret Penman, from Edinburgh, arriving alone on that vessel. ("Australia, South Australia, Immigrants Ship Papers, 1849-1940," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QLF6-2XZH : 15 March 2018), Margaret Penman, ; citing Emigration, Australia, name citing , Attorney General of South Australia, Adelaide.)

It appears during 1860, at age 22, Margaret married Thomas Newby (age 20) in Penola, South Australia - but he died some time during the 1980's

Following her husband's death, it appears that Margaret moved to Sydney, with her five young children

Margaret died during 1896, at age 58, with below notices of death in the newspapers
