Bruce Hamilton Penny was born in West Durham, North Carolina on 7 September 1921 to John Calvin Penny and Lula Belle Moore.[1]
He enlisted in the Army on 11 March 1941 under the Chemical Warfare Service as part of the 7th Chemical Company Aviation.[2][3]
Bruce served in the Southwest Pacific Theater during World War II and was captured by the Japanese. He died in a prisoner of war camp somewhere in the Philippines; his body was never recovered.[4]
His death is listed as 22 November 1942, and his name is part of the Cabanatuan Memorial in the Philippines.[5]
He is also acknowledged in the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial.[6]
Obituary
Bruce H. Penny, a corporal in the United States Army, died in the Philippine Islands, according to information received here. Corporal Penny was a brother of Watson H. Penny, of Richmond. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. J. E. Strawbridge of Durham, N. C., and Mrs. R. E. Phillips, of Missouri; and three brothers, Watson H. of Richmond; John C., and Dolian H. Penny, both of Chicago, Ill.[7]
