His mother died when he was still quite young, and his father remarried in about 1825. He was likely the "male of five and under ten" years in his father's household in Elkhart, Indiana in 1830,[2] and the "male 15 and under 20" in the 1840 census, in Saint Joseph, Indiana.[3]
After studying under Dr. Daniel Meeker, a physician of Laporte County, Indiana, he entered the Indiana Medical University there and graduated in 1848.[1]
He and Martha Holloway were married in St. Joseph, Indiana on 9 June 1842.[4] They had three sons and two daughters:[5]
Frank William Penwell (1843–1920)
George Volney Penwell (1846–1927)
Helen Matilda Penwell (1848–1874)
Mary Louise Penwell (1849–1931)
Orville Jerome Penwell (1855–1932)
He practiced medicine in Edwardsburg, Cass County, Michigan for about five years.[6] Then, he moved to Shelbyville, Shelby County, Illinois in 1853.[5]
His wife Martha died in August 1857, and on the 9th of December 1858, he married the widow Mary Davis (Coleman) Pugh in Shelbyville.[7] They had two daughters and (possibly) a son:
Richard Penwell (needs documentation)
Pauline Penwell (1864–1852)
Hilda Penwell (1874–1959)
They settled in Shelbyville, and he died there on 24 December 1904. He was buried in the Glenwood Cemetery in Shelbyville.[8][9][10]
