Biography

When Marie "Mary" Eugenia 'Jane' Pequignot was born on February 28, 1820, in Haute-Saône, Franche-Comté, France, her father, Stanislaus Pequignot, was 33 and her mother, Marie Francoise Griesz, was 33. She married Jean Joseph Schmitt Smith on 10 Jun 1837 in Wayne, Darke, Ohio, USA; they had 12 children together.

On 18 June 1859 she married Peter Goffena in Frenchtown, Darke, Ohio; they had one daughter, Elizabeth, together. She died on May 24, 1862, at the age of 42.


JOSEPH SCHMITT AND MARY EUGENIA PEQUIGNOT WERE FIRST MARRIED BY SAMUEL ENGLISH IN A CIVIL CEREMONY, JUNE 10, 1837 AND THEN A CHURCH CEREMONY, NOV. 23, 1839. JOSEPH SCHMITT WAS ONE OF THE TRUSTEES OF THE PARISH OF ST. VALBERT CHAPEL MARCH 27, 1842, WHEN THE PAPER WAS SIGNED TRANSFERRING THE LAND TO THE DIOCESE IN CINCINNATI. JOSEPH SCHMITT ALSO HELPED BUILD THE HOLY FAMILY CHURCH IN FRENCHTOWN, OHIO. THE FAMILY CHANGED THE NAME SCHMITT TO SMITH SHORTLY AFTER COMING TO THIS COUNTRY. ACCORDING TO THE CENSUS, THE LAST CHILD OF JOSEPH SMITH AND MARY EUGENIA PEQUIGNOT WAS BORN IN 1857. IN 1860, MARY EUGENIA PEQUIGNOT SMITH WAS MARRIED TO PETER GOFFENA AND RESIDING IN PATTERSON TW. THEREFORE THIS INDICATES THAT PETER GOFFENA AND JANE SMITH WERE MARRIED IN 1859 -- JOSEPH SMITH (HER FIRST HUSBAND) DIED, 1857.

Peter Goffena (born Goffinet in Habergy, Belgium in 1809, died in Darke County Ohio, 1872) had four wives and fifteen children. His first wife was Anna Marie Schmitt, the sister of Jean Joseph Schmitt, whose widow, Maria Eugenia (Pequignot), he later married.
