Biography

Benjamin Perry was the son of William Perry and Elizabeth Lobdell. He was born in Scituate, Massachusetts on 31 December 1688. [1][2] He was baptized at the Second Unitarian Church of Scituate on 10 February 1689. [3] On 20 February 1711/1712, he married first Ruth Bryant, daughter of Joseph Bryant, in Scituate.[4]

In 1724, Benjamin was mentioned in his brother, Isaac Perry's will.[5]

Benjamin and Ruth had, at least, ten children. Baptisms and additional information for their children can be found in the records of the Second Church of Scituate documented in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register Volumes 57 thru 60. Per Plymouth, Massachusetts Probate case 15721 dated 14 March 1742 for Samuel Perry, Benjamin's son, Benjamin was a mason, specifically a bricklayer. [6].

Following Ruth's death he married Bathsheba (Bates) Clark on 3 Oct 1744. [7][8][9] She was the widow of Joseph Clarke who died before 1736 and the daughter of Joshua and Rachel (Tower) Bates of Hingham, Massachusetts.[10]

The last record of Benjamin in Scituate can be found in the Second Church of Scituate records on 13 November 1751, but this could be his son Benjamin, although the Pastor appeared to be consistent with "Benj" and "Benj Jr”, [11] Many claim in various family files that he passed away on 8 October 1761 in Pembroke, Massachusetts and other locations, including South Carolina. No supporting documentation could be found in these family files.

Children of Benjamin Perry and Ruth Bryant

  1. Samuel Perry (1712-bef 14 Mar 1742) married Elizabeth Bryant (1708/1709-????)
  2. Benjamin Perry (1714-????)
  3. Peleg Perry (1717-????)
  4. Abiel Perry (1719-1719)
  5. Abner Perry (1720-bef 7 Sep 1746) married Sarah Sparhawk (ints. say Hannah)
  6. Ruth Perry (1723-1811?) possibly married Abraham Hardin/Harden in East Bridgewater, Massachusetts; however, it is more likely this was Ruth, daughter of Amos Perry and Ruth. Many others to most say she was Ruth Perry of Sandwich born in 1726, but that conflicts with Scituate and Bridgewater vital records and she was too young. The NEHGR article does not reference that line; therefore it is conjecture.
  7. Isaac Perry (1725-????)
  8. Zilah Perry (1728-bef 4 Feb 1810) married Job Cowing, jr.[12]
  9. Elizabeth Perry (1731-????) possibly married Joshua Bryant
  10. William Perry (1740-bef 1810) married Lydia Turner

Notes

Death location for Benjamin Perry. I lean towards Pembroke, Ma. as far as his death location. The area in which they lived became Pembroke before he died. Based on the research I've conducted it is unlikely that he died in Scituate, but unless hard evidence is found for either, we both could be wrong. Those that claim South Carolina are just as likely to be correct. Richard Bump Joseph Bryant probated 3 March 1738, [13] Samuel Perry probated 14 March 1742 Samuel’s wife, Elizabeth (Bryant) Perry was administrator. Samuel's wife Elizabeth was the administrator.[6]
