Biography

Brita Stina was born on 22 August 1803[1], and was christened on 28 August 1803[2]. She lived in Krontorp until 1820 when she became a maid at Fjärsbo. In 1827 she moved to Längnäs to work as a maid.

In 1828 she married Issak Fallman a soldier (livegrenadier) for Kinda. It is said that he got pneumonia from drinking cold water and died. He died when his son was 9 days old, he never saw his son Per Göran.

In 1830 she married Lifgr. Sven Peter Asp and they lived at the soldier's croft in Vilebo. Sven Peter died in 1861 and his son Jonas took over the farm at Vilebo. Brita lived in a house in Vilebo until she decided to immigrate. Brita immigrated to USA in June of 1869 following four of her sons Anders,Erik, Nils and Carl.[3] Two sons Peter Göran Fallman and Jonas remained in Sweden.

The family story is as follows:

Beside the son Nils, several sons emigrated to the USA. Even Brita Stina followed along on the journey. At the arrival in Göteborg it was however clear that the travelers had a lack of money for the boat tickets for all of them. It fell to Brita Stina's lot to stay in Göteborg. As she even lacked money for her journey home, she wrote among others to the son Per Göran and asked for help with money for the journey home. The son had maybe himself no money or maybe he thought that the Asps ought to help her as they had planned the journey so poorly. Finally after several years the Asps got together so much money that they could send her money to buy a ticket on to the USA. How she supported herself in Göteborg is not known.(She did return to Vilebo and lived with her son Jonas until 1869 when she immigrated just one week before her son Carl (my gr gr grandfather) (Kättilstad parish HFL (1865-1870) She did not get on so well in the new country where she stayed until her death. It is not known when and where in America she died.(1870 Illinois Census-Knox County-Galesburg shows Brita Swanson aged 67 living with her son Nils but disappears after that) From the journey register at the emigrant institute in Växjö it is clear that she left Göteborg on April 15, 1869.

• She left Sweden on The Romeo to Hull England where she took a train to Liverpool and then a larger ship, City of London to Castle Garden in New York. Records state she left May 21. • The emigrant agent was Fredrick Nelson. • Källkod: EIX: 1:660:2699
