Charles H Peterson was born September 13, 1866 at Peterson, Utah the son of George Henry and Eliza Wilde Peterson he was in effect the first son as his older brother died before he was two. He probably lived with his parents as they moved from Peterson and Morgan, Utah to Coalville, Summitt County, Utah and then to Wyoming where, while they lived near Almy, he met and married Mary Nelson Bruce on September 22, 1886 in Logan, Utah.They moved to the south end of Star Valley in Wyoming eventually purchasing property in what became known as Smoot, Lincoln County, Wyoming it was there that they raised their family of eleven children. Their house was the first frame house built in Smoot. The property consisted of the home and a two acre lot on the north of the road and a farm across the road along with a store that Charles ran having had some experience as a young man in Evanston. The store was a general merchandise store which had everything in it.Charles served as a County Commissioner for two terms and as bishop of the Smoot Ward for 18 years. Through the years they boarded and fed many people from the hired hands and boarders to the local sheepherders, travelers, government officials, and church leaders. It was a major part of their lives and something the children remembered. They spent much time gathered around the table and piano eating and singing with the family and these guests in their home. They had a large garden and along with the farm raised all the food they used.The children born to this couple were: Eliza and Isabell (twins), Gertrude, Myrtle, Rhea, Rula, Newell, Burnice, Fielding, Harold and Kimball. Charles died January 9, 1953 at his home in Smoot and was buried in the cemetary in Afton, Lincoln County, Wyoming. For a copy of his obituary. obituary {1}
