Biography

John was born about 1755 and is the son of David Pfautz and Catrina Spengel. John Leonard Fouts, the 5th son of Theobold Pfautz (aka: Dewald Fouts and David Fouts, Sr.) married Catherine Shearer about 1776 in Guilford, (now Randolph County) North Carolina.

About 1781 he moved to Rowan (now Davidson County) North Carolina. In 1784 he moved to Wilkes (now Ashe) County, North Carolina. In 1794 he went to Kentucky.

He had lands in both Ashe County, North Carolina and in Muhlenburg, Kentucky at the turn of the century (1800). His eldest son, George, was killed by Indians while with his father in west Tennessee about 1805.

John Leonard died about 1814, location unknown. Catrina, his widow, lived near her sons, Leonard, Jr., Solomon, John Peter, and Jacob on the New River in Ashe County. In the mid 1830's, Catherine moved with her son, Jacob and his family to the Iotla valley in Macon County, North Carolina.

She died about 1840 and is buried in Fouts Cemetery, Iotla Community, beside Jacob.[1]
