Biography

Micah Phillips Jr. was born about 1745 (or perhaps earlier, about 1732, since there are no siblings shown being born between 1729 and 1734). He was married 04 November 1766, Chatham, Massachusetts, to Dorcas Newcomb. One record of marriage intentions (see google books weblink listed in the sources section) at Chatham (dated 18 October 1766) calls him "Micah phillips Juner of Harwich" (and she is called "Dorcas Nucom of Chatham"). And also at Chatham, Records of Births, Marriages, Deaths Private Marks 1693-1789 for Chatham Massachusetts (page 522) reads as follows: "October 18th 1766 Then the intentions of Marriage betwixt Micah Phillips Jr of Harwich and Dorcas Nickerson of Chatham in order for publishment thereof to be made in Chatham." It is unclear why she is called Dorcas Nickerson instead of Neucomb. Their marriage intentions were also recorded at Harwich (Harwich Town Records, Volume II, page 193): "These are to enter ye intention of marriage between Mr. Micah Phillips Jr of Harwich & Mrs. Darkis Newcomb of Chatham. Oct 18th 1766." The actual marriage on 04 November 1766 was also recorded at both Chatham and Harwich. It was presumably his son Micah III who was married in 1793 to Hannah Bowers. If so, the fact that the 1793 records the groom as Micah Phillips Jr., his father Micah (Jr.) was presumably still living and then referred to as Micah Phillips Sr. (having given up the Jr. suffix once his father had died, whenever that was).
