John Jackson Pickering was born 22 Aug 1872 in Ohio, the son of Samuel Beard Pickering and Sarah Eliza Headley. His mother died when he was six, a few months after the birth of his younger brother James Elsworth Pickering. His father Samuel remarried in Nov 1879 to Lucinda Josephine Smith aged 16. Samuel had three children with each wife, although James Elsworth died when less than a year old.
John Jackson attended Ohio Normal College in Ada, Ohio from around 1890-1892. He could have met his first wife there. She was a woman named Georgia Harvey and they were wed in 1893. Georgia died before Jun 1900, as John was listed as a widower in that census. John and Georgia had no children.
John remarried Susie E. Gorrell on 29 Jul 1900. Susie came to the marriage with a daughter, Zadel Bernice, who John informally adopted (Zadel used the Pickering name for the rest of her life.). Susie and John had three sons together, Samuel Gorrell, George William Jackson, and Frederick Wayne. Susie died in 1953, and John Jackson, 10 Jan 1960 in Piqua, Miami, Ohio. John Jackson was instrumental in the raising of his eldest grandson, Larry, son of Frederick. Larry lived with J.J. for many years while growing up and in early adulthood.
