Biography

Dexter was born in 1827 at Jaffrey, New Hampshire, the son of Jonas Pierce and Lucinda Bailey.

He married Mary Elizabeth Buswell at Nashua, New Hampshire on 6 Feb 1851. They were the parents of ten known children.

• Note: Dexter's sister Betsey married Mary's brother Orlando Buswell.

Dexter was a farmer. In 1850, the census report for Jaffrey, New Hampshire shows Dexter, age 22, living with his father and step-mother Polly Rand Pierce as well as his five year old niece Vesta Pierce, daughter of Amos and Susan Walton Pierce.

In 1860, Dexter (32) is still living in Jaffrey, along with his wife Mary E (29) and their children Jonas C (8), Loren D (6), Willie (4) and Jane (1). Dexter has real estate valued at $1500 and personal estate valued at $2500.

By 1870, Dexter and his family are still living in Jaffrey, with his brother Addison living next door. Dexter is forty-three, Mary (50), Minot (18), Lowell (16), Willie (14), Justin (11), Austin (9), Myron (5) and Jennie (1). His real estate is now valued at $2000 and his personal estate is valued at $600. It is likely that Lowell is actually Loren Dexter Pierce, and that Justin (11) was named as Jane on the 1860 census. Minot is actually Jonas Minot who shows as Jonas C on the 1860 census. Also, Jennie (1) is actually a male, Jean L Pierce.

He passed away in 1875 at age 47 years, 11 months as a result of typhoid fever and pneumonia, at Jaffrey, New Hampshire where he is buried at the Conant Cemetery.
