Biography

Children: Pieter (Sep 5 1786), Jacob (Sept 23 1788), Cornelis (Feb 23 1791), Maartje (Feb 3 1793), Pietertje (May 23 1795 - Aug 17 1801), Dieuwtje (Nov 17 1796), Jan (Oct 19 1798), Klaas (Nov 11 - Dec 18 1800), Pietertje (July 1 1803 - Feb 17 1810), all born in Andijk.

A Jacob Mantel made profession of faith on May 12 1791. This is probably our Jacob. Aafje may have made it before him; there was an Aagt Jacobs who made profession of faith at the same time as Jacob. They appear together for the first time as a married couple on the 1793 Reformed Church membership list in Andijk as Jacob Pieterse Mantel and Aefje Jacobs. Two other Mantels appear just before them, but they seem to be only distantly related. In the list of 1817, Jacob Pz Mantel and Aafje Bakker are listed as having 3 people living in their household. So only one child must have been living with them at this point. There were also a Jacob Cornelisz and Jacob Jacobsz Mantel living in Andijk at the same time; the Mantels were quite prolific by this time. They also appear in the 1823 list

According to his son Pieter's marriage record, Jacob was a cattle breeder (veehouder). He was also known as a jack of all trades. He is listed in several notary documents as a neighbor who owned land and lived in De Boede in 1798 and De Buurtje by 1811. He acted as a voogd (guardian) of various children, including his wife's brother Jan Bakker's children.

In his boedelbeschrijving (division of goods) dated June 13 1802, Heere Kornelisz Dijkman's land is listed. Pieter Jacobsen Mantel owned land just to the west in Grootebroek on the west side of the Bijndensloot. Jacob Pietersen Mantel owned land just south of that.

On August 19 1834 Jacob received a kick in his stomach from his horse, and he died from it 2 days later.

On Aug 29 1843 Aafje Jacobs Bakker wife of Jacob Pieterzoon Mantel’s will was read. They originally wrote it April 22 1812. Recipients were Pieter (landman in Andijk), Cornelis (landman in Bovenkarspel), Maartje (wife of Pieterman Groot, landman in Andijk), Jan (landman in Andijk), Jacob (landman in Andijk), Jan (bouwman in Andijk) and Aafje (wife of Simon Groot, bouwman in Andijk). The first 4 were their children; the last 3 were the children of their son Jacob (deceased 1821) through his wife Teetje Groen, still living in Andijk. Also Pieter Prins (landman in Andijk, widower of their daughter Dieuwertje) and their children Gerrit (19), Jacob (14), and Dirk (9). Their uncle Cornelis was their guardian. Witnesses were Johann Wilhelm Faust, bread baker of Andijk and Meindert Groen, worker in Grootebroek. What follows is a list of all the belongings in the house and how much they are worth. The first few: 10 dishes, 3 guilders. A cupboard, 75 cents. A bible, 7 guilders. (I think) pots and pans, 2 guilders. 18 cups and saucers, 4 teapots, a sugar bowl and 5 plates, 6 guilders. 16 more dishes, 2 guilders. Cleaning pan, mirror, 2 drums (probably a large kind of container) & serving tray, 1.50 guilders. Oak chest, 6 guilders. A straight bench, 3 guilders. It’s very hard to read many of the rest of the entries, but some of the things included are salt containers, more dishes, bowls, copper kettles, a lantern, a clock (11 guilders), a table with six chairs (6 guilders), another table, 3 beds with 2 of something (maybe cots?), 4 pillows and various blankets (75 guilders), bed sheets, a golden earring with 7 lead and 8 other ones (90 guilders), a gold ring and 14 others (17.50 guilders). Altogether the household goods were worth 960 guilders and 30 cents. In addition they owned 4 houses with surrounding property, 20 parts of “meiland” (probably farmland), 2 of “bauwland” (arable land), 2 of “rietland” (reed land), 1 of “maerland” (lake land?), 1 orchard and 1 “boombasel”(?) in Andijk, altogether 2336 roeden and 95 ellen. In another area they had 12 parts of “meiland”, 1 of “bauland”, 1 orchard, 3 of “rietland” and 1 other in Lutjebroek, altogether 1722 roeden and 90 ellen. In other words, they were wealthy. Money owed them: From Cornelis 4719 guilders. From Pieterman Groot 1900 guilders. From Pieter Prins 3617 guilders and 67 ½ cents. From Jan Mantel the young 1100 guilders. From Jacob 1159 guilders. From Pieter Prins again: 135 guilders, for a total of 12,630 guilders and 67 ½ cents. Money they owed: To Pieter: 800 guilders. To Jan: 900 guilders. To Teet Groen: 380 guilders, for a total of 8080 guilders. Teet and her children owed another 3500 guilders from something else.

On October 19 1843, the same people are mentioned. Several things he owned are listed: 1. House and property in Andijk, including 7 pieces of meadow (weiland), 1 farm land (bouwland) and 1 reed land (rietland) worth 12,000 guilders. 2. 1 piece meadow land and 1 piece reed land next to Jacob Jacobsz Mantel’s family, worth 862 guilders. Apparently the land was named Theunis Pietersz. 3. 1 piece of meadow land also called Theunis Pietersz, next to Jacob Jacobsz Mantel’s family, worth 2300 guilders. 4. An orchard (boomgaard) next to Klaas Schuurman, worth 1800 guilders. 5. 2 pieces of meadow land called de Dorrekief along the Kleingouw (a canal in Andijk) on the west side of the Reinderslaan, next to Cornelis Janszoon, worth 2500 guilders. 6. 1 meadow called Lucas on the Kleingouw on the east side of the Reinderslaan, next to Jan Singer, worth 1100 guilders. 7. 1 piece of farmland called De Klein Akkers (the small acres) on the Kleingouw on the east side of the Reinderslaan, next to Jan Singer, worth 600 guilders. 8. 7 pieces of farming land that used to be meadow, called De Zeven Akkers (the 7 acres) along the Kleingouw on the east side of the Reinderslaan, next to Pieter Groot, worth 1100 guilders. 9. 2 houses and surrounding land, next to Pieter Reindersz Kooijman, worth 800 guilders. 10. 1 meadow named De Duizend Roeden (the thousand roeden, a measurement), in Grootebroek and Lutjebroek, next to Pieter Pietersz Groot, worth 750 guilders. 11. 1 meadow called De Keizers Akker (the king’s acre) in Grootebroek between the Reinderslaan and the Molenslaan, next to Pieter Pietersz Groot and Jan Willemsz Groot, worth 1200 guilders. 12. 1 piece of farm land called Het Houtland (the woodland) or Bierstekers, in Grootebroek between the Reinderslaan and Molenslaan, next to Pieter Dien, worth 175 guilders. 13. 3 meadows called Haas en Zeeman, in Grootebroek along the Jan Elsepleinlaan, next to Pieter Nanningsz Groot, worth 1800 guilders. 14. 1 meadow and 1 reed land called Het Kerkhof, in Grootebroek on the east side of the Pieter Wouterszlaan, next to Nanne Janszoon Groot, worth 650 guilders. 15. 1 piece of farmland in Grootebroek between Meindert Hoff and Pieter Silver, worth 200 guilders. 16. 5 meadows, 2 reed lands and 1 piece of water called De Vlees (meat), in Grootebroek along the Pieter Wouterslaan, next to Cornelis Singer, worth 2800 guilders. 17. A house named Het Urrumerland, in Grootebroek on the west side of the Melklaan, next to Jan Pietersz Rol, worth 1300 guilders. 18. The furniture, other belongings, the clothes, linen, gold and silver were already inventoried. They were worth 540 guilders 45 cents. 19. All the money Aafje had came to 16,624 guilders and 65 cents. After 2080 guilders worth of fees and debts paid, the net worth of Jacob Pietersz Mantel and Aafje Jacobs Bakker was 44,960 guilders. Of this money, 28,400 guilders were to be put aside for causes such as grandchildren. Children Pieter, Cornelis, Maartje and Jan Mantel and son-in-law Pieter Prins were to receive 1873 guilders 33 1/3 cents each for their inheritance, and his grandchildren through Jacob, namely Jacob, Jan and Aafje, were to receive 624 guilders 44 4/9 cents each. Together they received 5620 guilders, I’m not sure for what cause. Also inherited were: Cornelis was to divide everything in parcel 9 (the 2 houses) and all the belongings in the houses between everyone. Pieter received parcels 4 – 8 and 10 – 12. Cornelis received parcels 13 – 14. Maartje received parcels 1 and 15. I believe Jan received all his in money. Jacob son of Jacob also received his in money. Jan son of Jacob received parcel 2. Aafje daughter of Jacob received parcel 3. Pieter Prins received parcels 16 and 17. Most of them also received more money to equal the inheritance.
