Biography

Alice Ann Burton was born about 1825 to Robert Pigott and Harriet Lightup at Sheringham, Norfolk, England.

Her mother's second Given name was sometimes spelt Harriot.

Some of Alice's children were born in Upper Sheringham; Norfolk according to the Census records.

As a Spinster, Alice Pigott married a bachelor Robert Burton after Banns were read by the Established Church of Letheringsett, with Charles Codel officiating on 17 November 1845. Two to witness were Harriot and Robert Pigott and both fathers Robert Burton and Robert Pigott were named showing occupations as farmers. The event was registered in Erpingham in the parish of Stody county of Norfolk.

They had twelve children named:-Alice Maria Burton, Harriet Ann Burton, William Robert Burton, Robert John Burton, Fanny Maria Burton, Rachel Burton, Frederick George Burton, Walter Pigott Burton, Mary Elizabeth[Polly] Joseph Coleman Burton, Alfred James Burton and Rosa Anna Burton.

One of their children, eight year old Joseph Coleman Burton died in England on 13 January 1872. Alice was on her own for her husband Robert was about to arrive in Queensland on the ship "Light Brigade"

The Queensland Shipping News reported Robert aged 51 years with 14 year old son Frederick arrived in Kepple Bay, Rockhampton, on 28 February 1872. The state of Joseph's health was very likely the reason for the family immigrating on different dates.

Two sons were the first to depart London on 19 April 1871; they arrived Queensland 21 July 1871.

Her husband with one son was the next to depart England for Queensland.


Alice followed with five of their eleven living children.

Their eldest daughter was the last to arrive in Queensland.

Daughter Harriet married in England; she, with her husband and another brother, Walter Burton arrived in Victoria in 1872. They then journeyed by a coastal vessel to Queensland where they reunited the family.

Shipping records for the "Royal Dane" reveal Alice and her five children arrived as two teenage daughters travelling as Free Passengers; Alice and three younger children as steerage passengers.

Brisbane Courier 16 January 873, on the Shipping List. "The Emigrant ship "Royal Dane" under the command of Captain James Cooper arrived at Cape Moreton yesterday afternoon and anchored inside the cape. A telegram received by the Agent Messer J. G. Harris from Captain Cooper announcing all well on board. The Royal Dane sailed October 8 and made passage in ninety-eight days".

The Ship "Royal Dane" was formerly named "Sierra Nevada", the name changed in 1863; Official nr. 45822-1616 tons gross and net measurements - 222.2 x 44.4 x 26.4; built in 1854 by Toby Littlefield, Portsmouth, new Hampshire. From 1863 operated by the Black Ball Line, Liverpool in the United Kingdom; Australia trade. Sold by them in 1866 and in 1873 owned by F. Chapman; registered London;- wood hulled, 3 mast rigged - wrecked off the coast of Chile in 1877"

Land Orders for Alice A Burton and two children, Alfred and Rosa Burton, passengers on the ship "Royal Dane" were issued with Land Orders and they were delivered to Beenleigh on 4 July 1873. They were surrendered on 15 November 1873. Robert her husband a passenger on the ship "Light Brigade"; was also issued with Land Orders for an adjoining selection and both selections became known as Robert Burton Farm. After five years in residence; improvements achieved; The Deed of Grant was granted.

Children who pre-deceased her in Queensland were Robert John Burton who died 16 June 1876 , Rachel Burton 3 April 1880 and Rosa Anna 21 January 1891

Her husband died in 1903 at the residence of Mrs Green.

Alice applied for the Old Age Pension in 1908,1909

Death occurred on 2 April 1909 at the residence of her daughter Mrs A.M. Herlihy, Surrey Street, Red Hill, Brisbane, after a long illness.

Buried South Brisbane cemetery, Queensland, Australia with her husband.

Name: Alice (Alas) Ann Piggott. Given Name: Alice (Alas) Ann. Surname: Piggott. A Given name was found in addition to a first name in the NAME tag.
