William Francis Doucet and Sérène Pineau Wedding Photo

At her wedding, Mary Jane Pineau, Sérène's sister acted as bridesmaid, and Walter Doucette, the groom's brother, the best man. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Maurice McDonald of Charlottetown. Guests were invited to dinner at the groom's home in Rusticoville, followed by reception at the bride's home in North Rustico. Some two hundred guests were waiting for them, and everyone enjoyed an evening of dancing. Music was provided by Philip Robishand of Charlottetown.[5]

She had strong ties to P.E.I. and would return to visit family, particularly her son Ralph who was a who was a patient at the Charlottetown Hospital for some time circa 1953.[6]

In 1987, she and two other companions celebrated their 100th birthday together at the Centre d’Accueil Laurent Bergevin in L'Île-Perrot, Québec.[7]

Her 100th year was celebrated in the 1988 book about St. Augustine's Church in Rustico, published for the 150th anniversary celebration of the parish church. [8]

Research Notes

  • Alternate names: Likely due to anglicization, Sérène's name took various forms: Célina, from the notes in the church register entry for the baptism of her husband, see William Francis Doucet (1883-abt.1932). Serena is the more common English version of her name, as seen in newspaper articles and on her headstone.[4]

MRS. SERENA DOUCETTE
Serena was born on the 24th of July 1887, which makes her one hundred years old.  Our most sincere congratulations.  Serena was married to William Doucette and lived in Rusticoville for many years.  She is the mother of three boys and four girls, the grandmother of twenty-eight children and the great grandmother of forty-five children.  Serena has lived in Montreal for the past number of years and is presently residing at the Centre d’Accueil Laurent Bergevin.  Before entering the Centre, Serena lived with her daughter, Eleanor, son-in-law Tilmon and grandson, Darell.  Serena is the mother of Francis Doucette North Rustico and also of Harold and Ralph who are now deceased.  At the good old age of one hundred years, she still enjoys some of the Centre’s activities.  Continued good health, Serena.
Birthday[7]
• Maternal relationship is confirmed through Mitochondrial DNA test results on Family Tree DNA. Christopher Young, FTDNA kit # B753005, and his 9th cousin, G.L., have an exact HVR1, HVR2 and Coding Region match, thereby confirming their direct maternal lines back to their most-recent common ancestor who is Anne Blanchard, the 8x great grandmother of both Christopher Young and G.L.
