Joseph was born in Burke, Franklin, New York on 31 October 1888. He was born to Frederick Albert Plante and Aurelie Duquette. He married Margaret Etta Jones. He was a dairy farmer for most of his life in Malone, Franklin, New York. It was called Rock Springs Farm. There was a shed next to the big barn where they would keep the milk cold by the spring water. They had seven children. He passed away in Malone, Franklin, New York on April 1,1965. Joseph is the one who changed last name from Plante to LaPlante because he believed that his dad had Anglicized it. He wasn't allowed to speak French at home but he could understand it. His father Fred was a blacksmith. Joseph had sayings like "learn everything you can because you never know when it might come in handy" and "keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut and you will learn something." When he had children at home, he would be the one who would make the bread dough. The winters there were pretty rough, Joseph would tie a rope from the house to the barn so you wouldn't get lost in snowstorm.
