Geographical Note and Social context: The parish of St Dominic is situated in the Deanery and Hundred of East. There are numerous small hamlets and isolated buildings in the area. Halton Quay played an important part in the economy of the parish in the 19th century when it was an important fruit growing area, and the Tamar River was the main route by which lime, sand and manure came in and fruit went down to Plymouth. As with much of the area, farming is the main industry. Besides the Churchtown, the villages are: Cross, Burraton, Etheric (now Bohetheric), Halton Quay, and Ashton. There was a lot of good grazing land in this parish. Most parish and church description(s) on these pages are from Lake's Parochial History of the County of Cornwall by J Polsue (Truro, 1867 - 1873)[1]

Bristol City is a county in its own right. Both St James priory church and St Philip & Jacob church lie within Bristol County boundary.
The church of St James is one of the oldest churches surviving in the City of Bristol. It was founded as a Benedictine Priory, At the Dissolution of the Monasteries it became a parish church, and many of the domestic buildings as well as the eastern arm of the church fell into disrepair and have since disappeared.[2]
The church of St Philip and St Jacob was built outside the original walls, just beyond the castle. It was the chapel of a priory believed to have been Benedictine. It became a parish church during the 12th Century,[3]
In 1877 Clifton registration district, used for the registration of births, marriages and deaths, was replaced by Barton Regis Registration District.
Registration County : Gloucestershire.
