Biography

Col. William Poage was born 17 February 1756 in Augusta County, Virginia. He was the son of John Poage and Mary (Crawford) Poage. William was a farmer/stockraiser in Pocahontas County, Virginia (now West Virginia) and a ruling elder of Oak Grove Church. [1]

He married Margaret Davies, daughter of Rev. Samuel Davies and Jean Holt.[1] Colonel William Poage and Margaret Davies had fourteen known children, the majority were born in Pocahontas County, Virginia (now West Virginia). See Research Notes. The following information regarding the children is from page 286 of the referenced Poage book.[1]

  1. John Davies Poage, born 3 May 1777 near Staunton; married 26 November 1798 his second cousin, Martha Rankin, daughter of Thomas Rankin and Mary Crawford. He was married a second time 16 February 1809 to Sarah McPheeters. John died 30 December 1815.
  2. Mary Poage, born 6 July 1778, married September 1795, John Warwick, farmer; both died in New Castle, Clark County, Ohio.
  3. Robert Poage (8 June 1780 - 14 May 1844), farmer near Ashland, Kentucky; married 2 November 1806 Mary Poage, daughter of Major George Poage, who was born 4 November 1781.
  4. George Washington Poage, born 10 September 1781; farmer, Pocahontas County, West Virginia; married 9 April 1900, second cousin Margaret Rankin, daughter of Thomas Rankin and Mary Crawford. Margaret died 6 December 1914; he married a second time, 1815 to Elizabeth Beard, sister of Josiah Beard, daughter of Capt. John and Jeanette (Wallace) Beard.
  5. William Poage, born 8 February 1783; farmer near Marlinton, major in the War of 1812; married 1 January 1806 Mrs. Nancy (Warwick) Gatewood, daughter of Major Jacob Warwick and Mary Vance; married second Mary Crawford Blair, daughter of Matthew Blair and Elizabeth Rankin. POAGE BOOK ERRORS: His first wife is shown incorrectly as Mrs. Mary (Warwick) Gatewtood. Haven't found proof of a second marriage to Mary Crawford Blair.
  6. James R. Poage (15 September 1784 - 19 September 1850), married 2 October 1806, Jane Poage (22 Mary 1784 - 25 October 1831), daughter Col Robert Poage and Mary Hopkins; farmer, major in the war of 1812, removed to Monroe County, Mossouri and died there.
  7. Thomas Poage (10 January 1786 - 6 February 1816), married 12 December 1809 Margaret Boggs; farmer, Greene County, Ohio, just south of Clark. Margaret died 25 October 1860.
  8. Andrew Poage (4 June 1787- January 1791).
  9. Margaret Poage (6 June 1789 - 10 January 1812); married 10 May 1810 William Lammo, who d. 27 May 1827. She died in New Carlisle, Ohio.
  10. Andrew Poage II, born 8 June 1791, lived awhile at Port Gibson, Mississippi and died in Little Rock, Arkansas, not married.
  11. Elizabeth Poage (14 October 1792 - 17 September 1857), married 9 September 1811, Col. John Hill, farmer, Davies County, Missouri. Elizabeth died in Jamesport, Daviess County, Missouri.
  12. Charlotte Ann Poage (14 October 1794 - 17 October 1797)
  13. Moses Hoge Poage (27 January 1796 - 22 November 1853), married 7 March 1820 Martha McDannell (6 September 1802 - 25 October 1876). Martha was born in Bath County, Virginia and died in Monroe County, Missouri.
  14. Samuel Davies Poage (17 December 1798 - 5 May 1870), farmer, Pocahontas County; married Miss Rebecca Arbuckle, of Lewisburg, sister of Captain Charles Arbuckle of Texas and lived at the old homestead. who died Oct 21, 1848.

William died 7 April 1830 [1] and is purportedly buried at Oak Grove Cemetery, Hillsboro, Pocahontas County, West Virginia.[2]

Research Notes

Pocahontas County, Virginia was formed in 1821 from Bath, Greenbrier, Pendleton and Randolph counties. Bath County in turn was carved out of Augusta, Botetourt and Greenbrier in 1790.

Pocahontas County became a part of West Virginia in 1863.
