Biography

Cross of St George
Baker Polhill was born in England.

Baker Polhill was born on 11 April 1798 in Dover, Kent, England[1]and was christened on 8 June 1798 St Mary the Virgin, Dover, Kent, England, the son of Richard Cowley Polhill and Hannah Steddy and his siblings were John Steddy Polhill, Rutlidge Polhill, Ann Polhill, Mary Ann Polhill and Richard Cowley Polhill.

Baker married Caroline Andrews on 31 March 1823 at Willesborough, Kent, England[2] and their children were Helen Polhill[3] and Susannah Polhill[4].

He then married Sarah Tomlin Castle on 9 October 1827 at Portsea, Southampton, Hampshire, England[5][6][7]and they had five children. Their children were Charlotte Polhill[8], George Polhill, Edward Polhill, Sophia Lousie Polhill, Victoria Polhill and Baker Polhill.

In the Census of 1841 Baker was still residing in the family home with Sarah and seven children.[9]For some reason Victoria is not included on the attached Source, but she is on the UK Census Website[10].

Baker Polhill migrated from England to New Zealand.
Flag of New Zealand
Some time after the Census but before the birth of his son, and namesake, Baker Jr., Baker Sr. left Plymouth, England for New Zealand arriving in Port Nicholson (Wellington) New Zealand on 22 October 1841 on board the ship "Oriental"[11].

He travelled on the same ship as the Watts family, and it is not clear when the relationship began, but it appears he may have been in a liaison with Jane Watts either before leaving England, or the relationship developed while on board. Their first child, Jane, was born on 15 September 1842 in New Zealand. There appears to be no marriage record in the New Zealand BDM Registry Records and some of their children's births were registered under Jane's Maiden Name and all married using the name Watts. Their children were Jane Elizabeth (Watts) Rees Watts, Maria Watts, Ann Polhill, Albert Polhill Watts, Edward Craig Watts and Thomas Watts.

Baker died on 6 November 1853 in Lyttelton, Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand[12][13].
