James Porter was born on September 9, 1783 in Kintore, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, son of John Porter (~1731–~1790) and Anne Taylor (~1750–~1790). [1]

James had a daughter, Mary (Porter) Mortimer (abt.1813-), with an unknown partner, possibly a Mary Petrie. It's Mary's son George Mortimer (abt.1847-1911) who can be found in the 1851 & 1861 census listed below, as the Grandson of James.

James (29) married Janet Adam (22) (born about July 25, 1790 in Echt, Aberdeenshire) on May 21, 1813 in Kincardine O'Neil, Aberdeenshire. Their daughter was Barbara Harvey Porter (1832–~1875).

In the 1851 census James (age 65), Gardener, was the head of household in Deeside Road Cuparstone, Old Machar, Aberdeenshire.[2]
