Charles was christened on 14 Aug 1836 at St Helens Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. He was the son of William and Alice Prescot. His father's occupation was recorded as collier, and the family's address as St Helens.

By June 6th 1841, they were living in Church Street, Westfield, Eccleston. Charles' father was a coal miner. The household also included John, Alice and George Manhurst - probably Charles' maternal grandparents and uncle.

By March 30th 1851, they were living in Greenoughs Row, Parr. Charles and his father were both miners.

Charles married Ellen Briscoe on 11 Jul 1858 at St Thomas' Church in Eccleston, Lancashire. Both lived in Eccleston, and neither had been married before; Charles was a 22-year-old collier, Ellen was 21. Their fathers were named as William Prescott (collier) and Edward Briscoe (collier). The witnesses were Henry Kay and Alice Kay.
