Biography

This profile is part of the St Helens, Lancashire One Place Study.

William Prescott was born in about 1804 in Newton, Lancashire. Probably his birthplace was was Newton-in-Makerfield (aka Newton le Willows) as the closest Newton to St Helens where he spent his adult life; but it's not the only Newton in Lancashire.

William married Alice Meadows on 12 Aug 1827 at Rainford Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. Both were of the local parish, and neither had been married before; William was a collier. The witnesses were Ellen White and Joshua Fairclough. [1]

Their daughter Ann was christened on 19 Oct 1828 at St Helens Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was recorded as collier, and the family's address as St Helens. [2]

Their daughter Alice was christened on 17 Apr 1831 at St Helens Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was recorded as collier, and the family's address as St Helens. [3] She died in 1833, and was buried on 9 Dec 1833 at St Helens Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. Her age was recorded as 2, and her address as St Helens. [4]

Their son John was christened on 22 Dec 1833 at St Helens Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as collier, and the family's address as St Helens. [5]

Their son Charles was christened on 14 Aug 1836 at St Helens Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as collier, and the family's address as St Helens. [6]

Their son William was born in about 1839, [7] and christened on 17 Mar 1839 at St Helens Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as collier, and the family's address as St Helens. [8] He died at 12 months of age, and was buried on 25 Feb 1840 at St Helens Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. His address was St Helens. [9]

Another son William was born in about February 1841, [10] and christened on 9 May 1841 at St Helens Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as collier, and the family's address as Eccleston. [11]

By June 6th 1841, they were living in Church Street, Westfield, Eccleston. William was a coal miner, baby William was 2 months old. The household also included John, Alice and George Manhurst; it seems likely their surname is an error and these were the parents and brother of William's wife, surnamed Meadows not Manhurst (see Notes on Alice (Meadows) Prescot's profile for details). [12]

Another daughter Alice was born in 1843, [13] and christened on 17 Mar 1844 at St Helens Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was recorded as collier, and the family's address as Windle. [14] She died in 1845 in Prescot district, aged 1. [15]

Their son Richard was born in 1846, [16] and christened on 16 Aug 1846 at St Helens Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as collier, and the family's address as Windle. [17]

Their son James was born on 3 Nov 1848, [18] and christened on 25 Feb 1849 at St Peter's Church in Parr, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as collier, and the family's address as Parr. [19] He died in 1850, and was buried on 28 Feb 1850 at St Helens Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. His age was recorded as 17 months, and his address as Parr. [20]

By March 30th 1851, they were living in Greenoughs Row, Parr. William was a miner. The two youngest "sons", Thomas and George, were probably grandsons, born out of wedlock. [21]

William died in 1855 in Prescot district, aged 50. [22]
