Goals

The goal of the MICELI NAME STUDY project is to find every non-living person with the surname and make a wikitree profile for them. We have traced the Miceli Family in Alia, Sicilia back to about 1725, to the parents of Vincenza Miceli who married Rosario Centanni. We would like to link this Miceli Family with other Miceli Families throughout Sicilia, and find the history of the Miceli family back as many further generations as possible.

We would also like to find all the descendants of the Miceli family in Sicilia and where ever they may have migrated over the centuries.

According to Ancestry dot com, the name is a variant of the given name Michele, or in Greek, Mikhailas, and in English, Michael. People with this surname probably had a male ancestor and were given their father's name as a surname, a common practice in early Sicilia.

• Filippo Miceli appears on the 1714 Revili Census of Sicilia with his wife Anna Unknown and his two children:

1. Calogero Miceli, born 1712, and age 2 in 1714.
2. Giuseppa Miceli, age not given, but born before 1714.

• Anna Miceli who married Giuseppe LoTuso and had at least one child Castrenze LoTuso.

• Rosario Miceli who married Marina Macaluso before 1750, and had at least one child, a daughter named Vincenza Miceli who married Rosario Centanni before 1768. We think Vincenza was named for her father's father. Her possible early ancestors are listed below.

MICELI FAMILY TREE FROM FAMILYSEARCH

A Miceli Family Tree on familysearch dot org lists the following Miceli family members. We are looking for good sources to support this research:

1. Gaetano Miceli, born 1660 married Anna Todaro born 1665 before 1685. Church records from the Diocese of Cefalu' will be necessary to document these births and this marriage. Gaetano's parents would have survived the Black Plague which struck Sicily in 1656.
2. Vincenzo Miceli, born 1685 is the son of Gaetano Miceli and Anna Todaro. Church baptismal records will be need to document this birth and baptism.
3. Vincenzo Miceli married Stefania Panzarella before 1725. Church marriage records will be necessary to document this marriage. Vincenzo may also be listed on the 1714 Revili Census of Alia. Vincenzo probably survived the major earthquake in Sicily in 1693 due to its distance from his home town of Alia.
4. Rosario di Miceli was born about 1725, the son of Vincenzo Miceli and Stefania Panzarella. Church baptismal records will be necessary to prove this birth and baptism.
5. Rosario di Miceli married Marina Macaluso before 1750. Church marriage records will be necessary to prove this marriage.
6. Vincenza Miceli was born about 1750, the daughter of Rosario di Miceli and Marina Macaluso. Church marriage records will be necessary to prove this birth and baptism.
7. Marina Macaluso also has ancestors from the Miceli family. She is said to be the daughter of Isadoro Macaluso and Lucia di Miceli. We will need her baptismal records to prove this research.
8. Lucia di Miceli married Isadoro Macaluso before 1725. We will need church marriage records to prove this marriage. Lucia di Miceli might also be listed in the 1714 Revili Census of Alia.
9. Lucia di Miceli was born about 1700 and is the daughter of Mariano di Miceli and his wife Domenica Unknown. We will need church records to prove this birth and baptism and it is very likely that Lucia is mentioned on the 1714 Revili Census.
10. More research is necessary on all these lines and we are hoping that the necessary records will be digitized in the near future. Travelers to Alia might be able to find them at the Roman Catholic Church in Cefalu', which is the Cathedral for the Diocese of Cefalu' in which Alia resides. Census records might be available at the Archivo di Stato in Palermo, but a personal visit might be necessary if the Census is not digitized.
