OBITUARY

THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, September 21, 1916

JONATHAN PULLEY

Jonathan Pulley was born in Guernsey county, Ohio, July 18th, 1827, and died at his home in Chariton, on September 13th, 1916, his age being 89 years, 1 month and 25 days. When he was about twelve years of age he removed with his parents to Grant county, Indiana.

When twenty-six years of age he was united in marriage to Martha J. Marsh. After eight years they moved to Benton township, Lucas county, Iowa, where he made his home on the farm until three years ago.

In their home were born five children, three daughters and two sons, one daughter and one son preceding their father to the better land. The living children are Alice A., at home who has given him her constant care during the long period of his last illness, Phoebe A. Morrett, of Benton township, and J. D., of this place. All were present during the death and at the burial services. His wife and companion for thirty-seven years departed this life in 1890.

When a young man he was converted to Christ and became a member of the M. E. church and for about seventy years he has been a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. He took much interest in building the Otterbein church and donated one acre of ground for the site and every much appreciated the ministerial work of the Rev. Mr. Yaggy, who was pastor here some twelve years ago, and who was called to preach the funeral sermon.

During his afflictions he suffered very much for several years. He said he was willing and ready and was glad to go. His last words bore testimony to his trust in Jesus and his hope of heaven, but his testimony that counted the most was his everyday life.

The funeral services were held from the home on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Jacob Yaggy, of Des Moines, assisted by Rev. Curtis, of this city. The music was in charge of singers from Otterbein, the old home church, and from the United Brethren church of Chariton. The pall bearers were W. T. Schreck, J. W. Rosa, G. N. Mitchell, H. L. Jackson, A. C. Reibel and Walter Brewer. Interment was made in the Chariton cemetery.
