Biography

Walter, son of Urias Robenstine and Emma Lutz,[1] was born in 1890.[2] He was raised as the eighth of 11 children in Suffield Township, Ohio, where his father was a farmer.[3] By 1910, 20-year-old Walter was sharing a home in Akron, Ohio, with his older siblings Mahlert and Vina.[4] All three were working: Mahlert as a clerk in a rubber factory, Vina packed cereal, and Walter drove a streetcar.[4]

In 1913,[5] he married Emma Augusta Lange, daughter of the German immigrants[6] Wilhelm Friedrich August Lange (1843-1908) and Auguste Henrietta Kutz (1847-1898).[5] Emma bore him two sons: Kenneth Walter (b. 1914)[7] and Roy Leslie (b. 1916).[8]

At the time of the draft registration for the First World War (1918), Walter built tires for Kelly-Springfield Tire Co. in Akron.[9] The father of two young sons was described then as being of medium height and build with gray eyes and black hair.[9]

Walter continued working in the rubber shop in 1920.[10] By 1930 he had been promoted to foreman[11] and moved his family from Suffield Township, Portage Co.,[10] to Mogadore, Summit Co.[11] Between 1935 and 1940, the Robenstines moved again to Salem in Perry Township, Columbiana Co., Ohio, and incorporated a nephew, Richard Cain.[12] Both sons sold tires and Richard was a mechanic in a garage.[12]

When Walter registered for the Second World War in 1942, he was living in Salem, Columbiana, Ohio,[13] where he managed his son's business.[13] At that time he was described as 5'7.5" tall, 190 lbs., with gray eyes and hair and a ruddy complexion.[13]

After his death in 1961,[14] Walter was buried in Maple Hill Cemetery, Mogadore City, Summit, Ohio, United States.[15]

Research Notes

  • Birth record shows he was born in Suffield; WWI draft registration shows birth in Tallmadge.
