OBITUARY
Late Mr. H. A. Rayner
At Monday's meeting of the Mudgee P. P. Board. Chairman Jim Mills referred to the lamentable passing of Mr. Herbert Allen Rayner, who, he said, had served the ratepayers and the Board faithfully and well for very many years.
The chairman went on to say that the late Allen Rayner was a man with a long, honorable record and that his death was sincerely regretted right throughout the district.
Out of respect for a devoted friend and colleague the members of the Board observed a minute's silence.
A member of a pioneer district family, deceased carved out a home for himself in the Hargraves district. When he took over the property, it was almost virgin bush and the work of improvement was long and particularly strenuous. But, lion-hearted and persevering, he gradually transformed the area into one of the picked properties of the district.
In addition to his grazing activities, he established a fine orchard, and his apples were renowned in Mudgee and elsewhere. In addition to his service as a P. P. Board director, he was prominent in other public activities. When the bush fire brigade movement was initiated in this district Allen Rayner was one of the leading spirits, and held high executive positions in the Hargraves branch. Other movements having for their objective the welfare of the people in country areas found in him an ardent champion, while his benevolence knew no bounds. He was a man of firm convictions and never swerved from the straight and honorable path which he had mapped out.
Altogether, the late Allen Rayner was a great-hearted man and a citizen of true worth, and the whole district is the poorer by his passing.
The widow and family, have suffered a bereavement which is hard to bear, but they may find some consolation in the knowledge that their loved one has left behind an honored name, which will be held in reverence for long years to come.
