James and his wife, Rena, have been married for 9 years. He works as a farmer on rented land. James is unable to read or write.[3]
The 1920 U.S. Census lists James as a 49 year old married black man living with his wife and a daughter in a rented home in Cheneyville. His birth year is estimated as 1871. James is unable to read or write. He is a farmer working on a general farm "on own account".[4]
The 1930 U.S. Census lists James "Ried" as a 65 year old married Negro man living with his wife and a daughter in Cheneyville. His birth year is estimated as 1865. The family no longer lives on a farm. James has not attended school recently but he is able to read and write. He works as a laborer doing odd jobs. James did not serve in the military.[5]
