Biography

Hugh was born in 1829 in Pike County, Alabama[1] and lived most of his life in Coffee County as a farmer[2][3] [4][5][6]. In addition to farming, he may have also worked as a tax collector for Covington County, Alabama[7].

He is the son of Hugh Richbourg and Mary Williams. He married Milbra Pearl Helms around 1853; the 1900 census shows they were married 47 years at the time. They had at least 10 children, many of whom changed the last name from Richbourg to Richburg:
Jacob Hugh Richburg (1856-1918)
Lethea Elizabeth Richburg (1856-1920)
Sarah Rebecca Richburg (1859-1936)
Mary Victoria Richburg (1860-1880)
Josephine Milbra Richburg (1862-1940)
Amanda Virginia Richburg (1866-1938)
Florence Alabama "Bama" Richburg (1868-1935)
Abbie Jane Richburg (1869-1877)
John Perry Richbourg (1872-1936)
Ella Belle Richburg (1878-1961)

Hugh Richburg was transferred 80 acres of land in Coffee County, Alabama that had been provided to Alexander C Stephens for his service in the War of 1812[8].

Hugh was a Private in the 53rd Regiment, Alabama Partisan Rangers during the Civil War[9][10].

He passed away in 1906 and is buried in Hickory Grove Cemetery, Opp, Covington, Alabama[11].

Notes

There are 3 Hugh Richburgs listed in the 1855 Alabama census in Coffee County, and it is not possible to accurately identify which may be this Hugh Richburg or which may be his father. The 1866 Alabama census records on FamilySearch are actually the 1855 records.
