Biography

Abraham Riggs Jr. was born in 1757 in Virginia. He married first Elizabeth Lafton/Loftin/Loughton and had one child, Eli Riggs (1789-1839). He secondly married Anne Loftin and had children: John Ruben b. 1795, Eiizabeth Rachel b. 1797, Thomas b. 1799, and Catherine b.1803. He had moved to Iberia Parish Louisiana in 1800. His petition in 1835 for pension as Revolutionary War Veteran and participant in the Battle of Brandywine was disputed because he was not able to provide adequate proof of service. However, the New Iberia Chapter of the DAR placed a marker on his grave acknowledging his service. He passed away in 1843 and was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, New Iberia, Louisiana at the age of 86.

Note

Found in Rev. War File where Abraham Riggs filed for pension in 1835, at age 78. He could not remember his birth date nor who he served under. He was denied the pension because of this.

On 7 March 1795, Abraham Riggs of Edgefield County, South Carolina, sold to Reuben Rew of Accomack County, Virginia, thirty-eight acres of land. In November 1835 Abraham Riggs applied for a Revolutionary War pension while he was living in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana. As he could not prove his service, this petition was denied. He claimed to have served under Captain Thomas Parker, commander of the 11th Virginia Regiment. In 1926, the New Iberia Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution placed a marker at the grave of Abraham Riggs, stating that he served at the battle of Brandywine. The 11th Virginia Regiment did not see action at that battle.
