David Ritchie was born on January 16, 1801 in Stevenston, Ayrshire, Scotland, son of David Ritchie (1772– ) and Margaret Sellars (~1765– ).[1] [1]
David became a seaman and settled in Greenock, Renfrewshire where he married Jane Burny (24) (born on June 24, 1801 in Greenock, Renfrewshire) on September 3, 1825 in Greenock, Renfrewshire. [2]
Their children were:
David's wife, Jane has been identified on the 1851 Census in Shaw St, Greenock with their sons, James and Duncan. It is believed that David was likely at sea at the time.
At the time of the 1861 Census, David and Jane were living at 50 Shaw St, Greenock, with their son, Duncan (19). David was a mariner, and their son, Duncan an apprentice blacksmith. Also in the home were lodgers, Emily Foster and Peter McGovern.[3]
Neither David or Jane can be found on the 1841 or 1871 census records.
David was imprisoned in Greenock Prison in 1862, but no further details on what charges are known at this time. [4]
David died aged 79 years on 13 July 1879 at 24 West Stewart St, Greenock, Renfrewshire, a seaman, he was the widower of Jane Birnie, the informant was their son, Duncan Ritchie.[5]
