Jane (Honor) ROBERTS - CHAMPION

Birth and childhood

The eldest daughter of John Roberts and his wife Hannah (nee Hannah Tom) was probably born in 1828 at St Breward in Cornwall, and was baptised there on 11 May 1828 under the name Honor, after her paternal grandmother.

However in the 1841 Census of England she is recorded under the name of Jane Roberts and it seems likely that this is the name she used throughout her life. In that census she is aged 12 years, and although relationships aren't clarified the others in the household are her parents, John, an agricultural labourer, age 40, Hannah, her mother, age 35, and three younger siblings, Thomas, age 9, Susan, age 6 and Rebecca, age 3. They are living at Torr Downs, in the Parish of St Breward.[1]

Marriage

Jane Roberts married Elisha Champion in December quarter 1850 at East Stonehouse in Devonshire.[2]

1851 Census

Elisha and Jane are living in Adelaide Place, in town of East Stonehouse in 1851 Census of England. Elisha is recorded as being aged 23 and Jane, aged 21, and Elisha's occupation is given as carpenter. Their birthplaces are difficult to read and look like Borage, Cornwall, and St Brewer, Cornwall, but later census confirm it should be Breage and St Breward. Interestingly it looks like there may be five households in the one address; three couples and two single men.[3]

Children

They had the following children:

  1. Elisha Champion, born in September quarter 1851 at East Stonehouse, Devonshire[4] he was blind or partially blind from a very young age;
  2. John James Champion, born June quarter 1853 at East Stonehouse, Devonshire;[5]
  3. Elizabeth Hannah Champion, born June quarter 1855 Stoke Damerel, Devonshire,[6]; baptised 16 September 1855 St Breward as Elizabeth Anne Champion;
  4. Sarah Jane Champion, born June quarter 1857 Openshaw, Lancashire[7], died aged 6 in March quarter 1864[8];;
  5. Rebecca Susanna Champion, born September quarter 1859 Openshaw, Lancashire[9], died aged 4 in March quarter 1864[10];;
  6. Samuel Thomas Champion, [11] born December quarter 1861 Openshaw[12], died young in March quarter 1864[13];;
  7. Samuel Toms Champion, born March quarter 1864,[14] probably after the death of his brother;,
  8. Sarah Rebecca Champion, born September quarter 1866 Openshaw[15];
  9. Thomas Henry Champion, born June quarter 1869 Openshaw [16];

Later life

1860s

As can be seen from the birth of their children, at some time between late 1855 and early 1857 they moved to Lancashire, and are certainly living in the town of Openshaw by the 1861 census. They are residing in Grecian Street and the family now consists of: Elisha, age 34, a carpenter; Jane, age 30, a house wife; and their five children; Elisha, age 9, (a Boy - crossed out), 'blind from 1 week old'; John James, age 7, a scholar; Elizabeth H., age 5, a scholar; Sarah Jane, age 3; and Rebecca S. age 1, a child. Their birthplaces are as above, though Elizabeth's is written as 'Stoke darrel'.[17]

Again as can be seen from the list of children, their three youngest children, at that time, all died in March quarter 1864, probably from an epidemic or virulent disease.

1870s

In the 1871 Census of England, they are still living in Openshaw, Lancashire, but in Bessemere St. The family this time consists of: Elisha, age 44, a carpenter; Jane, age 41; Elisha, age 19, this time 'blind from birth'; John J, age 17, an apprentice [no trade is mentioned]; Elizabeth, age 15, a Cotton Framer(second word not clear); Samuel T, age 7; Sarah R, age 4; [over page] Thomas Hy Campion, age 2.[18]

Again at some time after the 1871 census, John James and Elizabeth Hannah, both move to Manchester and are married there on the same day, perhaps in a joint ceremony on 11 February 1875

Her husband Elisha died aged 59 in December quarter 1885.[19];
