William retired from the police force in April 1897 and moved to his family farm in Charles County, Maryland in Washington, District of Columbia.[11]

Sometime before 1930, William's wife Mabel left him and moved to Washington, D.C. to keep house for her brother-in-law, John Carrington after her sister Margaret's death. William and Mabel's son, William F. Robie, often said that his father was a "hard man," not easy to live with, and this prompted his mother to leave the marriage.[15]

William died at the age of 78 on 16 September 1942 in Charles County, Maryland. A death notice appeared the next day in The Evening Star, a Washington, D.C. newspaper:[18]
"William Robie, 78, a retired farmer of Billingsley, Md., and a former member of the Metropolitan Police Department, died yesterday at Garfield Hospital after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Robie retired from the police force here 45 years ago and engaged in farming in Maryland. For the last few years he had spent his winters in Florida. He is survived by three sons, A.N., William F. and Norman H. Robie; four daughters, Mrs. Mildred Jansen, Mrs. June McDonald, Mrs. Azalea Narden and Mrs. Doris Dulin; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Lee funeral home, Fourth street and Massachusetts Avenue, N.W. Burial will be private."
Funeral: 18 September 1942 in Washington, District of Columbia, USA.[19]
