João (Rodrigues Baptista) Baptista migrated from Madeira, Portugal to Hawai'i.

João Rodrigues Baptista was born in October 1843. He was the son of João Rodrigues Baptista and Maria Espírito Santo.[1][2] João first married Antónia do Espírito Santo in the parish of Magdalena do Mar.[1] This blessed event occurred on the 30th of October 1865.[1]

Antónia died on the 28th of March in 1868 at the age of nineteen.[3] João remarried as a widower to Francisca da Silva on the 13th of May in the parish of Madalena do Mar.[2]

In 1886 João and Francisca boarded a ship to Hawai'i.[4] With them were their children Maria, age 15, Ludovina, age 13, Rosa, age 10, António, age 4, and João, age 1[4]

John's wife Francis died on the 16th of September 1919 in Kilauea, Hawai'i.[5] John died on the 27th of June 1926 at the age of eighty-two.[6]

On the thirtieth day of the month of October in the year 1865, in this Parochial Church of Santa Maria Magdalena do Mar, county of Ponta do Sol, diocese of Funchal, in my presence attended to the engaged João Rodrigues Baptista and Antónia do Espírito Santo both of whom I know, with no impediments to canonical or civil law, after presenting the license from the judge; he twenty-two years of age, single, baptized in this church, born in this parish, living in the site of Passo, the legitimate son of João Rodrigues Baptista and Maria Espírito Santo, both now deceased and natives of this parish; and she eighteen years of age, single, baptized in this parish, born in this parish, the legitimate daughter of Manoel Rodrigues de Sousa, native of this parish, and Anna do Espirito Santo, born in the parish of Canhas, both living in the site of Passo in this parish of Magdalena do Mar; the engaged couple received as man and wife and their marriage in the form of the rites of the Roman Catholic Church of Santa Maria. The witnesses present, whom I know, were João da Silva e Abreu, married, a farmer, living in the site of Vargem in this parish, and Manuel Fernandes da Graça, married, a farmer, living in the site of Aryos in the parish of Canhas. I recorded this term in duplicate, and after reading to those present, and the father of the bride gave his consent, they didn't sign with me as they couldn't write.[1]

On the 13th day of the month of June in the year 1868, in this Parochial Church of Santa Maria Magdalena do Mar, the county of Ponta do Sol, the diocese of Funchal, in my presence attended the spouses Joao Rodrigues Baptista and Francisca da Silva whom I know, with both the spouses in the manner of, and with no impediments, the canonical and civil laws, he twenty-three years of age, the widow of Antonia do Espirito Santo, native of this parish and living in the site of Rua, the legitimate son of Joao Rodrigues Baptista, native to Arco da Calheta, and Maria do Espirito Santo, native of this parish, both already dead; and she the age of twenty-six, single, baptized in this church and born in this parish, living in the site of Vargem, the legitimate daughter of Joao Rodrigues Coelho, native of this parish, and Maria da Silva, now deceased, native of Canhas, the spouses who were received as husband and wife, and with the marriage in the form of the Rites of the Roman Catholic Church of Santa Maria. The witnesses were Antonio Rodrigues Coelho and Francisco da Silva e Abreu, both farmers and living in Passo and in Vargem. I prepared this seat in duplicate and after being read and given assent, the witnesses did not sign with me, as they were unable to right. What is written is true.[2]
Note: Although two-and-a-half years had passed, John only gained one year in age within the marriage records.
