Biography

James Carroll Rogers was born in 1835 in Nacogdoches County, Texas to Samuel Everett Rogers and Elizabeth Sparks. He married Nancy Elizabeth Howard, daughter of John H. Howard and Saran Gage Burleson, on 4 Aug 1857 in Stephenville, Erath County., Texas by Justice of Peace Dooley. They were reportedly the first couple to be married in Stephenville, Erath Co., TX in the first log cabin courthouse that later burned down. James was a rancher and a frontier lay minister, often riding to neighboring towns to preach the gospel. He and his wife, known as Eliza, had 16 children and moved frequently, seeking a better life. He was a member of the Texas Militia during the Civil War, serving on the frontier of Texas during a time of frequent Indian raids. His father, Samuel, was scalped and killed during a raid at their home on Rocky Ranch near Carlton, Texas on 3 May 1863, while James was away on duty. This family moved into Indian Territory of OK when son Columbus Alexander Rodgers, made Cheyenne-Arapaho Land Run in 1893.

Eliza died in October 1903 on their ranch near what is now Bessie, Oklahoma. James made his home with his son, Samuel E. Rogers, and passed away in Dec 1912. This couple lie at rest in the Union-Hatchett Cemetery in Washita, Oklahoma.[1]
