Marshall was born on 5 January 1857 in Rusk, Cherokee County, Texas, United States. He was the son of John Vincent Ross Sr. and Rebecca Mourning (Ivy) Ross.

In the 1860 census Marshall (age 3) was living in Beat 8, Cherokee, Texas, United States. Note: Residence Post Office: Rusk.[1]

When Marshall was about 21 he married in 1879.[2]
