Biography

Elizabeth was born about 1892. Elizabeth is the child of Marcus Rough and Eliza Anderson. At the time of the 1910 federal census, she was still living at home with her parents in Brooklyn, NY.

The most significant source of information about Bessie is the license for her marriage to Charles Eugene Melvin.^[1] According to this document, Bessie had been previously married to someone of the last name Smith. She was divorced from him March 1, 1919, in Chicago. We can identify this Bessie Smith as Bessie Rough because the marriage license lists her parents as Marcus Rough and Eliza Anderson. Bessie and Mr. Smith appear to have had a son, named John, as one John Smith appears in the 1930 federal census living with Bessie's mother and listed as her grandson.

The marriage license also tells us that, at the time of her marriage to Charles Melvin, she was working as an actress. This is not surprising, as many members of the Rough family, including her brother Henry Cornelius Rough, were involved with various aspects of the theatre.
