My grandfather once told me that he didn't know much about his grandmother. I have now learned more about her than he ever knew, which brings me a great deal of satisfaction, because I know that a part of him still thrives in me, and that we are making these discoveries together.

Descendants, having lost track of Abner and Amanda, had long assumed that the two had succumbed to either influenza or Pellegra, as their great-grandmother had never given any indication as to what became of her parents.
The guardianship papers revealed not only a sister, but led to the discovery that Amanda had outlived Abner, and married Michael Calhoun after the death of his first wife.
