Biography

Born 1639-04-01 Wallingford,New London,Connecticut,USA. [1]

Death Ens. Nathaniel Royse d. Feb 8, 1726[2]. The 1736 date frequently seen was an error by Davis in the History of Wallingford[3].

Nathaniel was by trade, a carpenter and joiner and in 1687 a blacksmith.[3]

His Will was dated 18 April 1718 at Wallingford, New Haven County, CT. Added by Quall-1

Children

  1. John Rois s. Nathll b 11 Apr 1675[4] by Esther.
  2. Benjamin Rois, s Nathll b 6 May 1677[4] by Esther. I suspect because of the close proximity of this birth to Esther's death, that she died from complications of childbirth.
  3. Sarah roys, da. Nathanill & Sarah b 03 Apr 1683[4].
  4. hester roys, da. Nathanill & Sarah b. 10 sep 1685. Easter Royse, da Nathanil & sarah died 14 Oct 1703[4].

Nathaniel Royce, son of Robert

"Nathaniel, d 8 Feb 1726 WV; Ens; m (1) 27 Oct 1673 WV (brides surname omitted)-- Esther [da. John Moss], b 2 Jan 1653 NHV [1653/4], d 19 June 1677 WV; m (2) 21 Apr 1681 WV -- Sarah da. Samuel & Elizabeth (Scudder) Lathrop, b Oct 1655 NorwichV, d 11 Nov 1706 WV; m (3) 24 Aug 1707 WV-- Hannah Wilcoxson wid Peter Farnum, who d 6 Feb 1708 WV; m (4) 25 Aug 1708 WV--Abigail da Nathaniel Cooke, wid. Joshua Pomeroy & David Hoyt." From Jacobus' Ancient Families of New Haven[5]. Explanations [ ] in the book means the information is unproven. The WV's stand for Wallingford Vital Records, the NHV's for New Haven Vitals etc.

The Vital Records (Jacobus would have used the originals, mostly nowadays we use the published versions.

Birth: There is no birth record, nor did his death record list an age nor was he deposed in court, giving an age. He married 1st in 1673 and went to Wallingford probably before that marriage. So the latest he would have been born was about 1653. We know Nehemiah was born about 1634-1637 and we surmise from marriage dates that brothers Jonathan and Samuel were born in between, so Nathaniel was born not before 1640 and not after 1653. The specific birth dates sometimes given in 1639 belong to Nathaniel the son of Robert Royce of Boston who was baptized 24th day 1st month 1639[6]

Marriages

(1) Nathll Rois married abt. 27 Oct 1673[4] Interestingly the bride is not mentioned. We definitely know her name is Esther from her death. Someone sometime decided it was Esther Moss. Esther Rois, w. Nathll died 19 June 1677.[4]

(2) Nathanell roys, & Sarah Lothup m. by Mr. Mosse 21 Apr 1681[4] Sarah Roys, w. Jns {could Jns be a misread of Ens. (Ensign)} Nathanil died 11 Nov 1706[4]. The vital records show his marriage to Sarah Lathrop not Abigail who was at one time mistakenly listed here. Perhaps she was confused with Abigail Hoyte.

(3) Ens. Nathaniel Royse m Hannah Farnam Aug 2[4], 1707 by Justice Fowler [2]. Hannah Roys w, Jns Nathanill died 6 feb 1708.

Peter Farnam, husband of Hannah, died 14 Feb 1703/4. He and Hannah had 7 underage children. On 19 March 1707/8, “Nathanell Royse, although he married the Wedow Farnam of Killingworth by agreement was not to be concerned with adm’n of her former husband’s estate.” Hannah died in Feb 1707/8, soon after which her daughter Hannah chose her “father Nathaniell roise” for her guardian, and Anna “Willcoxson,” mother of Hannah (Wilcoxson) Farnham Royce, petitioned that her son-in-law Nathaniel Royce of Wallingford and John “Willcosen” and Sgt. John Crane of Killingworth be appointed guardians of the other children. Royce was appointed on 15 april 1708, but the following 5 June Anna again petitioned for guardians for her grandchildren. Royce “for sum Reasons” having “wholy decline[d] the matter.”[7]

(4) Ens. Nathaniel, m. Abigail Hoyte, Aug 25 1708, by Justice More[2]

(5) Probably not a wife: Davis' History of Wallingford[3], mentions a 5th wife Phebe Clark whose marriage to Nathaniel is recorded in the vital records Dec 27, 1720. Davis is notorious for making errors. Jacobus is a much more careful genealogist. By 1720 there are other Nathaniels to marry Phebe. Anyone know who she is? B-404 20:17, 6 May 2014 (EDT)

Royce-490 and Royce-129 appear to represent the same person because: One of the same wives, dates match in day/month.
