Biography

This profile is part of the Runion Name Study.

Paternal haplogroup imputed to be R1b1b2a1a2f from Charles Runyan III's genotyping. This haplogroup is consistent with that of other male descendants of Vincent de Rongnion, who emigrated from Portiers, Poitou, France to New Jersey and is believed to be the ancestor of all Runyans (and all of the other spellings of the last name, including Runyon and Runnion) in the U.S. No one (yet) has been able to identify Jeremiah's parents, though, so the link is undocumented.

Supplement to Runyon Genealogy, by Robert Runyon, page 212 - "Jeremiah Runyon was born in NJ circa 1765. Tradition says that he lived a while in VA and from there came to Rutherford CO, NC. The first notice of Jeremiah Runyon found in Rutherford CO is a land grant for 100 acres, lying at the head of Bridge Branch, waters of the First Broad River. The entry was made December 10, 1792 and was surveyed August 5, 1795. He married Salley......, circa 1803 in Rutherford CO. She was born in VA about 1785. ...accumulated large land holdings in Rutherford Co. He served in the US Army [7th Cavalry] during the War of 1812. The part of Rutherford CO where he lived became a part of Cleveland CO in 1841. Jeremiah was in some manner connected with the Furman family of NJ. ...had at least 4 sons and 2 daughters..."

Genealogy paper entitled 'The Gibbons-Runyan Families of Cleveland County, NC',, page 37-39, believe document located at NC Archives, Raleigh, NC. Article states "...One of the neighbors of John and Hannah Gibbons was the Jeremiah Runyan family. The Runyan family appears in Rutherford County as early as 1796, when Jeremiah purchases land from Jesse Rippy. Jeremiah and wife Sally are listed in the 1850 Cleveland County census as being 85 and 65 years old respectively. The census lists Jeremiah's birthplace as New Jersey and Sally's as Virginia. The known children of Jeremiah and Sally were: Jeremiah, Jr.; Reuben H.; Eliza; and Didianna Runyan. On September 3 1835, Margaret S Gibbons married Reuben H Runyan, and on February 25, 1836, Jesse K Gibbons married Eliza Runyan. Both marriage bonds are listed in Rutherford County..."

Jeremiah was issued a grant for 100 acres of land on the Bridge Branch of the Broad River in Rutherford County, NC, on Dec. 10, 1792 (grant 1183, Book 91, page 368). There is another record of purchase of 100 acres on Big Branch on Sept. 28, 1799 (grant 1913, book 105, page 407).

Buried with wife Sarah "Sally" at Pine Grove Methodist Church Cemetery, just off Hwy-18 from Shelby, NC to Gaffney, SC. a few miles from I-85 in Cleveland County NC. By Garda M. Hodgson

Sarah "Sally" Harris3 (John2, Isaac1) was born in about 1784/5 in Virginia - most likely in Brunswick County, Virginia. She married Jeremiah Runyan, who was considerably older than she. She was age 65 in 1850, and his age and place of birth was given as "age 85, New Jersey" in the 1850 census of Cleveland County, North Carolina. Cleveland County was formed from Rutherford and Lincoln Counties in 1841. It was reported in the 1880 and 1900 census records that the father of Reuben H. Runyan was born in New York. The 1880 Cleveland County census report for Eliza (Runyan) Gibbons also indicated her father's birthplace as New York.

Mona A. Wamick in her book, Borders, Logan, Rippy, Crawford, Runyan and Connections gives the following information about the origin of the Runyan family:

The Runyan (Runyon) family is of Huguenot ancestry. Our first ancestor to come to these shores was VINCENT RONGNION (ROIGNON), born at or near Portiers, Vienne, France, about 1645-47. To escape religious persecution, the family went first to the Isle of Jersey, off the coast of France, and then to New Jersey about 1665-6, and first settled in Elizabethtown.

The account continues naming Vincent's wife, Ann Martha Boutcher, and his children, John, Vincent, Ann, Thomas, Mary, Peter, Jane, and Sarah Runyan. A direct connection between Vincent Runyan and Jeremiah Runyan was not made, but Jeremiah was possibly a descendant of Vincent. Jeremiah Runyan was first mentioned in the Rutherford County, North Carolina Court records in October Court 1782 as a result of a law suit brought against him by James Miller, Jas Russell, and Stand Selby, in which he (Jeremiah) was security for John Twitty. The suit was discharged. Of course, Jeremiah would have been "of age" at that time, so he was born at least as early as 1761. In addition, data from Sarah and Jeremiah Runyan's tombstones was sent to me by Gordon Runion, of Inman, South Carolina. "Jeremiah Runyan died April 5, 1851, age 93." If he was age ninety-three at death, he would have been born in 1758 which seems quite possible.

Sally died August 11, 1853; they both died in Cleveland County, North Carolina, and were buried at Pine Grove Methodist Church Cemetery, just off Highway 18 from Shelby, NC to Gaffney, SC, a few miles from Highway I-85 in Cleveland Co, NC.

The is no connect of Jeremiah Runyon to Richard Runyon and Jemima Hoagland, even in the sources on their profiles. A large amount of duplicates have been made unnecessarily, creating a lot of work.
