"They [Henry and Sophia] located in the small village of Lanark about 50 miles south of Ottawa. Henry and his uncle Charles Russell, a brother of his father John, opened a flour and feed mill there ... Henry and Sophia's two oldest children were born there, John and Eva. As the dust from the mill affected Henry's health, they decided to move to North Dakota where his uncle William had located. Henry moved his wife and two children to a farm near Claremont [Pickering], where Sophia's brother, Tom, was manager ... Sophia and the children lived there until the third child she was expecting was born. A daughter Cora, was born there on the 26 March 1888 ... Sophia joined her husband in North Dakota as soon as the baby was old enough to travel. Their first home was a log house on the open prairies. She [Sophia] was often frightened by the Indians when they came around for food, but soon learned they meant no harm." [2]
"George Russell and his wife came from Scotland in their later years, having been preceded by their family of five sons and one daughter. Mr. Russell died after a few years, but Mrs. Russell was a resident of Claremont for many years. She was known for her simple faith, always believing that the Lord would provide, and saying with quiet confidence as she approached the valley of the shadow: 'I'm no feared tae gang alane." Their family were John, James, William, Robert, Charles and Elizabeth. John married Elizabeth Boyer and lived on Lot 15, Con. 7. Their family are Henry (married Sophia Johnston), David (married Martha [Johnston] Russell), George (married Hulda Rumohr) and Duncan, now of Vancouver. James Russell married Janet Carruthers, and was well known in Claremont for many years as a miller. He now lives in Manitoba. William Russell married Lydia Burton and went to Dakota. Robert died some years ago. Charles Russell married Christena Clarke. Elizabeth Russell (Mrs. James Milne) died some years ago." [3]
Henry passed away in 1934.
