Biography

This profile is a passenger of the Empress of Ireland on May 29, 1914. He perished in the shipwreck.

In the 1901 census William (age 53), Winding Eingine Keeper, was the head of household at 9 Bogside Cottage, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire.[1] In this census return is his daughter Catherine who later married William Parker. She is the daughter in the newspaper clipping (photo attached). I think Alexander Russell in the clipping is his brother.

William's Parents were Peter Russell and Margaret Thornton. This is based on a newspaper article in the Wishaw Press on the 5th of June 1914. The article has a picture of William and tells of how he went to Canada to join his son but wanted to return to Scotland. It names his father as Peter Russell and mentions 3 brothers who all became engine keepers including one who went to America and one called Alexander who still lived in Cambusnethan and 4 married sisters who still lived in the area. Russell 3790 already had a profile, I created one for Margaret Thornton and the son Peter who went to America. Happy to research the other siblings or any other family members when I have a bit more time.

this gets more and more interesting, the picture of the family group was sent to me by the person who found it in the wall of their home while renovating, and that person had told me who had resided there back then. I am wondering if the people aren't the Kerr family plus the Russell father and other daughters as shown on the census. Do please keep digging for more sources, very much appreciated.

I've added the photos of William, Peter and Mary and the children that were published in the local papers. Do you think they are the same people in the photo?

could be, taken at different eras.
