John Rutherfurd of Edgerston, New Jersey The first borough to be incorporated in Bergen County, in 1881, Rutherford took its name, using a variant spelling, from that of John Rutherfurd, a one-time state legislator and United States senator whose family owned much of the land in the area, according to Rod Leith, the borough’s historian.
