Biography

George was born about 1770 the son of Henry Rutt and Susanna (Sutcliffe) Rutt.

He was christened on the 29th April 1770 at the Aldermanbury Postern Chapel (Independent). The baptism record reads: April 29th, George the son of Henry Rutt was baptised at his house in Fenchurch Street by Jos Barber.[1] The Ancestry source states that the church was the Aldermanbury Postern and Founders Hall Chapel (Independent) but this was before the merger between Aldermanbury Postern and the Founders Hall congregation which took place in 1797. See Aldermanbury Postern Independent Chapel for details.

On 5th May 1783 he began an apprenticeship with his father to become a glover. His father was described as Glover of Fenchurch Street, a citizen and clothworker. He must have completed his apprenticeship because his son Henry Rutt (1797-1868) was able to become a Freeman of the City by Patrimony.[2]

George married Hester Townsend on the 2nd December 1796 at St Andrew, Holborn, Middlesex, England.[3]

On 1st March 1807 George was proposed and accepted into membership of the Aldermanbury Postern and Founders Hall Independent Chapel [4] His children had been christened at the church.

George was included in the Dissenting Academy at Homerton list of contributors defraying the expense of the alterations and repairs at Homerton in 1811, and was shown as Mr. G. Rutt, Hackney. He was also included in the Dissenting Academy at Homerton list, published in 1812, of annual subscribers, and was shown as Mr. George Rutt.

1841 Census on the 6th June 1841 George was living in Lower Clapton, Hackney, Middlesex aged about 70, with his sisters Amelia Rutt, Elizabeth Rutt and Mary Rutt.[5]

George was attacked and robbed in the street in Bishopsgate Street, London. The newspaper reported: POLICE INTELLIGENCE MONDAY.MANSION-HOUSE. A man named Edward WhIte, who had the appearance of a Seamen, was brought before the Lord Mayor, charged with having committed a highway robbery in Bishopsgate Street. Mr. George Rutt, of Fenchurch Street, an elderly Gentleman, who had evidently received severe blows in the face, stated that on Saturday evening, as he was passing at the corner of Bishopsgate Street, a person whom he believed to be the prisoner seized him behind, and dragged his watch and seals from his person; and another man struck him a violent blow on the nose, and knocked him down. Upon being taken up, witness called to the person who raised him to secure the thieves, and the prisoner was accordingly seized, but the other ruffian escaped.[6]

George died aged 73 on the 8th July 1843 in Hackney, Middlesex.[7]

His death was reported in the London Evening Standard - Tuesday 11 July 1843: July 8th Lower Clapton, George Rutt Esq., in his 74th Year.[8]

George was buried on the 15th July 1843 at Bunhill Fields burial ground, Islington, Middlesex used by nonconformists. The burial record states his body was brought from Clapton.[9]

A photo of his grave is available on the Find a Grave website.[10]

The inscription on the family grave reads: ALSO THE ABOVE MR GEORGE RUTT OF FENCHURCH ST AND LOWER CLAPTON WHO DIED 8th JULY 1843 AGED ?3 YEARS

This was a family grave and the whole inscription is recorded on his father's profile.

Rutt Family, London Nonconformists

The Rutt family were nonconformists, with various family members attending different churches in London. A few joined the Sandemanian Church in London, although his parents Henry Rutt and Susanna Sutcliffe did not join the Sandemanian's, as George's christening at Founders Hall proves.

See Rutt Family, London Nonconformists for more details.
