John was born in 1723.
John married Mrs Elizabeth Frith on 22 December 1748 at St. Mary, St. James Chapel, Warwick, England[1]
In 1784 John received £5 in the will of Edward Rutt (~1731 - 1784). The will stated
Also I give and bequeath to unto the Reverend Mr John Kello of Bethnal Green to the reverend Mr Samuel Brewer of Stephey to the reverend Mr John Ryland senior of Northampton five pounds each

Elizabeth died in 1799 and he married Mrs. Stott, widow of an officer. John Ryland (1753–1825) and Herman Witsius Ryland were sons by his first wife.
He died in Enfield on 24th July 1792 and was buried in Northamptonshire [3]. He was buried on 29 July 1792 in Northampton, Northamptonshire[4]
He became the Minister of the baptist church in Warwick and started a school which he ran at the same time. After 13 years he moved to College Street Baptist Church Northampton were he was for 26 years, also running a school. In 1786 he left Northampton and settled in Enfield, where again he established a school.
He ran a school in Northampton for many years, which he appears to have handed over to Mr Clarke in 1785, The newspaper announcement stated
ACADEMY,—NORTHAMPTON. MR. CLARKE requests the Friends of the Rev. Mr. Ryland, sen. his own Friends, and the Public in general, to observe, that it is his Intention to carry on the SCHOOL which Mr. Ryland has kept in Northampton these twenty-five Years past, with the personal Assistance, and under the immediate inspection and Superintendence of Mr Ryland: And he flatters himself, that by such Alliance he not fail to meet with Encouragement, and to merit Approbation; especially as it will continue to be his unwearied and constant Endeavour to cultivate the Minds, Morais, and Dispositions of the Pupils committed to his Care, to the tittermofl of his Ability, as well as to pursue those Lines of Instruction that shall best qualify them for Professions, Trade, and Business.The School meets, after the Midsummer Recess, on Monday the 25th instant. Horse-Market, July 4th 1785 [5]
He kept a list of the pupils he taught which has been published, and which includes the names of many pupils from nonconformist families, available at Rev John Collet Ryland's Scholars
John was listed as a supporter of the Society for Promoting Religious Knowledge among the poor in the 1763 report and the 1779 report which the charity published. The report 1779 recorded him as Rev John Collett Ryland of Northampton and that he had been a supporter since 1758[6].
