María de la Lúz was born on the 3rd of March 1914 in Smelter Town, El Paso to Jesús Salcido and Pilar Jimenez. She was the fifth of nine children with three older sisters and one older brother as well as two younger sisters and two younger brothers.
Luz spent the early part of her childhood in her hometown before the family moved to San Gabriel, Los Angeles - likely after the death of her mother in 1924. They rented a house, 305 San Marino Ave. for $16 per month as of 1930.
She married Vernon Torres sometime in the first few months of 1930, possibly on or just after her 16th birthday. They rented 1413 Benito Ave. along with Vernon’s brother Henry and his family as well as a Japanese family for $10 per month. Together they would have seven children, four boys and three girls. Lucy herself would stay home to raise the children while Vernon worked.
Eventually they bought 8436 Beverly St. in Whittier, Los Angeles, consisting of the main house and separate guest room in the back. Lucy and Vernon lived in the main house with their family, while their daughter Emily Mata and her family took up residence in the back.
As of 1950, Vernon was listed as unable to work, possibly due to a congenital heart condition. He died soon afterwards on the 12th of January 1951 from a burst colon ulcer. Their marriage was reportedly unhappy, and her son Henry recalls that upon hearing that her husband had died, she put on her favourite yellow dress and began to dance around the house.
Within the year, she remarried to Tom Hobbs. Together they had one son, Tom Hobbs Jr..
She passed away in 2009. [1]
