Biography

Name: She was Fanny in Tennessee, Frances in Missouri. Her paternal grandmother was also named Frances. Her married name was Johnston in Tennessee, Johnson in Missouri.

Born: About 1820 in Monroe County, Tennessee. Year of birth is from census records. County of birth is based on her parents' marriage in Blount County in 1818, the year before Monroe County was created adjacent to Blount, and her father's location in Monroe County in the 1830 census.[1][2] See research note below about her parents.

Marriage: A marriage license was issued to Fanny Samples and William P. Johnston in Monroe County on 4 November 1840.[3]

1850: Fanny and W.P. Johnston had three sons and a daughter in Monroe County. She was recorded adjacent to her father John Samples and stepmother Jemima. [4]

1860: Frances and William P. Johnson were recorded with five sons and one daughter near Pittsburg, Hickory County, Missouri.[5] She was the first of eight siblings and half siblings to move to Hickory County. The other seven arrived after the Civil War.

1870: Frances and William remained near PIttsburg in Hickory County. Two teenage sons were in their household. Adult son John was recorded adjacent to them. Neighbor Mary Knight, married to Jasper Knight, may have been their daughter.[6]

Death: After 1870. Neither Frances nor William were recorded in HIckory County in the 1880 census, nor were they recorded with any of their known children.

Research note: Identification of John Samples as Frances' father is based on her Samples maiden name, census location next to John in 1850 in Tennessee, and location in the same Missouri county as several other of John's children in the 1860 and 1870 censuses. John was married to Elizabeth Kithcart or Cathcart from 1818 to the 1840's, so she should have been Frances' mother.

Samples-603 and Samples-992 appear to represent the same person because: I recommend using approximate years of birth and death as shown in Samples-992. Two of three census records indicate Fanny was born in 1820. I have not found any record for her after 1870, so I marked her year of death as after 1870. -- Lowell Samples
