Biography

Flag of Yorkshire (adopted 2008)
George Sawyer was born in Hunslet, Yorkshire, England.

George was born in Hunslet, Yorkshire, England, on November 22, 1872. (Hunslet is an inner-city area in south Leeds). He was the son of Joseph Sawyer and Eliza Raper. His father passed away in 1884. George is enumerated with the family in Hunslet in the 1881 census, and in 1891, is enumerated as a lodger and apprentice glass blower in the household of Joseph Blackett, still in Hunslet. George was baptized on October 4, 1893, at age twenty one, in Rothwell, Yorkshire, at Holy Trinity. (Rothwell is a market town in the south-east of the City of Leeds). He was baptized with his mother Eliza Ann, and siblings Harry, William, Thomas, and James.

George married Annie Akers on April 4, 1896, at St Mary, Middleton. (Middleton is a largely residential suburb of Leeds). According to the Parish Register, George was a twenty three year old bachelor and "Glass Blower" residing in Hunslet. His father was named as Joseph Sawyer, "Brick Layer" (Deceased). Annie was listed as a twenty year old spinster, no occupation, residing in Middleton. Her father was named as William Akers, "Laborer" (Deceased). The witnesses were William and Mary Akers. George and Annie would have seven children before Annie's death in 1919. (In the 1911 census, Annie declared she had seven children but one had died).

George and Annie are enumerated in the 1901 and 1911 census residing in Hunslet with their children. George's occupation from 1891 through 1911 was as a glass blower or bottle maker. Annie passed away in 1919. It does not appear George remarried. He is enumerated in the 1939 Register residing alone in Leeds. He lists his occupation as "Retired" (Glass Bottle Maker).

George passed away in 1950. His death was registered in the fourth quarter in Leeds. He was seventy seven.
