Eliza (Abbishaw) Sykes was born in Yorkshire, England.

Eliza was born in Rothwell, West Riding of Yorkshire, England, on February 28, 1891. (Rothwell is a market town in the south-east of the City of Leeds). She was the daughter of Fred Abbishaw and Eliza Raper. It was the second marriage for her mother who had nine children from her marriage to Joseph Sawyer. She was baptized on March 29, 1891, in Rothwell, at Holy Trinity. She resided with her parents and extended family in Rothwell until her marriage in 1913.

Eliza married Thomas Lee Sykes on December 25, 1913, in Rothwell, at Holy Trinity. According to the Parish register, Eliza was a twenty two year old spister, no occupation listed, residing in Rothwell. Her father was named as Fred Abbishaw, "Pit Sinker". Thomas was listed as a twenty eight year old bachelor and "Clerk" residing in Rothwell. His father was named as Thomas Sykes, "Carrier" (deceased). The witnesses were Fred Abbishaw and Mary Ann Sykes. Eliza and Thomas would have at least three children between 1914 and 1929. Eliza and daughter Marjorie were listed as dependents of soldier in Thomas' World War I Service Records. They were residing at 121 Empress Terrace, Wood Lane, Rothwell, in 1915. Eliza and family were enumerated in the 1939 Register still residing in Leeds.

Eliza passed away on June 11, 1976. According to her Probate, her address at time of death was the Oakwell Geriatric Hospital, Birstall, West Yorkshire. (Birstall is approximately 6 miles south-west of Leeds). She was eighty five.
