Daughter of Mathias Schaefer & Margaretha Diedrich

Anna & Friedrich were the parents of the following children, in birth order; infant died in Germany, Bernard died in Germany, Maria Catharina (Johann Gerhard Stilling), infant died in Germany, Johann F. (Maria Schmitt), Margaretha (Johann Huemann), Jacob (Anna Catharina Justen) and Maria (Nicolas Schneider)

Friedrich Schmitt, wife Anna and their six children, departed Prussia (Germany) in May 1842 and arrived at the Port of New York in June 1842 per his Declaration of Intent, Woodstock, McHenry County, Illinois

Friedrich and Anna along with their six children, came to Johnsburg, McHenry County, Illinois in 1842, the year following that of his brother Jacob Schmitt, in August 1841, who with Nicholas Adams and Nicholas Frett, had founded Johnsburg. The sailing ship (name unknown) that Friedrich and his family were on, was victim to bad weather, delaying their arrival in America by three months. Friedrich vowed that if the family arrived safely, they would erect a chapel in thanks to God for their safe arrival. The chapel was built in 1843, built of logs, and later the logs were covered over with bricks. The Schmitt Chapel is located on a portion of what today is the Chapel Hill golf course on Chapel Hill Road in Johnsburg. Descendants of the Friedrich Schmitt family continue to maintain and upkeep the Schmitt Chapel

NOTE: On Saturday, 19 October 2019, the Schmitt Chapel received a Historical Landmark Plaque from the McHenry County Genealogical Society.
