Biography

Gottfried (Godfrey) Johann Schiefelbein was born 19 May 1848 in Germany. He married Henrietta Elizabeth Mittelsteadt (1845–1908) and they had six children:

  1. Frederike Mathilde Emily Schiefelbein (abt. 1870-1963)
  2. Amelia Schiefelbein (b. abt. 1871)
  3. Louise Wilhelmina Schiefelbein (later Mittelsteadt) (1871-1945)
  4. Wilhelm Godfrey Schiefelbein (1873-1930)
  5. Ida Mary Schiefelbein (later Ost) (1882-1951)
  6. Unknown

At some point they emigrated to the United States, potentially after 1860, and resided in Sauk County, Wisconsin.

In 1875, Gottfried, under the name Godfrey Scheffebein, was residing in the Town of Ironton, Sauk County, and reported five male members of the family and four female members.[1]

He was recorded in the 1880 U.S. Census on 15 Jun 1880 as G. Shiefelbein. He was aged 37 (making his birth year estimated to be 1843), had an occupation as farmer, and living in either the Village or Town of Ironton with his wife Hattie, aged 35, and his children, Amelia, aged 9, Loise, aged 8, William, aged 6, and Poliana, aged 1.[2]

In the 1885 Wisconsin State Census, he was reported as Godfrey Shifflebeine, living in the Town of Ironton, Sauk County, and having six children. Four were reported as born in the United States and two in Germany. Four of the children were white females and two were white males.[3]

In the 1895 Wisconsin State Census, he was reported in the Enumeration of Soldiers and Sailors in the Late War (Civil War) as Godfrey Shifflebine and living in the Town of Ironton, Sauk County. He was apparently a Private, however, he was the only person on the page to not report a company, regiment, state, or vessel; in fact, it reads "no rank given" despite Private being recorded, perhaps the default. His post office though was Reedsburg.[4]

He died 4 Mar 1898[5] in Reedsburg, Wisconsin at age 54. He was buried in Block 2, Row 36 of Saint Peters Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Reedsburg.[6]

Research notes

There appear to be two John Schevelbins in the Village of Highland, Iowa County in the 1870 U.S. Census, however, the birth years do not appear to correlate, either 1832 or his son's, 1866.
